An Eagle Eye for News & Events -
A Lasting Legacy for the Pinoy Community

By Imelda Roberts

I first met Johnny Pecayo in 2006 during the launching of my book,Barefooted Soul, held at the Embassy of the Philippines in Washington, DC. As both of us were former San Miguel Corporation (SMC) employees, there was a strong familiarity with the culture of excellence. Though Johnny spent 20 years of his young successful career at SMC, it was only here in the United States that I got to know him more. His tremendous support in my project was heartening, and his work in the community he served was equally impressive.

Before joining SMC, Johnny was the youngest, at the age of 18, to join thestaff of the Department of Foreign Affairs. It was however in SMC where his love for editorial work proved to be his ticket to many interesting accomplishments of his career. His passion for performing editorial work, landed his name in the editorial staff box of Kaunlaran Magazine. SMC News, BMD Newsletter (which he founded), BMD Marketing Management Digest, Bunga ng Pinagsamahan Beer Dealer Magazine, Beer and Packaging Products Newsletter, and Beer Marketing and Brewing Newsletter. Simultaneously, he also was editing the AMC Newsletter, official organ for Ateneo de Manila Graduate School of Business, which he also founded; PMAP Newsletter, official organ for the Personnel Management Association of the Philippines; Communicate, official publication for the Philippine Council of Industrial Communicators; TASSCOR Newsletter for the Insurance industry; and Buhay Barangay, for the Association of Barangay Captains in the Philippines.

Aside from his editorial assignments, Johnny took on many other responsibilities in a number of areas. It was his excellent contributions to SMC that paved the way to a scholarship from SMC. He completed his MBA in 1982 at the Ateneo de Manila University Graduate School of Business, paid for by SMC. It was also while in SMC that Johnny got married in December 1973 to Elizabeth Bueno with whom he has three children - Joseph, James and Maria Liza.

Migration to the USA

On September 29, 1989, Johnny and his family migrated to the USA and started a new life in California. Just like many parents, the decision to live the Philippines according to Johnny, "Was primarily to bring our children to America, for better education, and brighter future."

Starting a new life in America in many cases is difficult especially if you have children. Fortunately for Johnny, it did not take long to find a job and he was readily tapped by LBC Mabuhay Corporation. As Area Manager for the San Diego, California he learned the ropes of running the business. He later left the company to set up his own business, Door-to-Door, Inc.

Johnny's career certainly was not confined to his own business. He was later appointed Marketing Director for a nursing registry, dealing with various hospitals in Southern California. It was however his work with Expose, Philippine Observer Weekly, L.A. Free Press, California Tribune, and Manila Mail that made him realize that his first love is writing and edting. Despite challenges of setting up a newspaper given the high level of competition, this did not stop Johnny to pursue his passion. On May 1, 1991, he put up hs own newspaper, MANILA-U.S. TIMES. MUST has been in circulation since then, for almost 20 years now.
